CHIPMILL VIGIL RESULTS DECEMBER 16 2005
Multi-aged forest Regrowth Chips TOTAL From North 28 7 3 38 From south 72 40 8 120 Total 100 40 11 158 Percentages 68% of log loads 32% of log loads 7% of trucks We did a one day vigil at the chipmill corner on 16 December 2005 - shorter than usual due to the chipmill knocking off early this year. They didn't break their record of 163 trucks in a day (last year), but put in a good effort with 158. We were located on the Edrom road corner, so probably also missed some trucks which were taking logs from coupes along Edrom road.
It is important to note that loads from the south are not all from Victoria. Most of the Eden forests are south of the chipmill and by the time trucks arrive at the corner, it is impossible to tell where they have come from.
The Cocks company maintained its position as top logger, being responsible for 11% of log loads to the chipmill.
Again, there was an enormous number of huge split logs. SEFE continues to tell us that it only takes smaller sized logs, less than 60cm. That is because they split them in the forest before they load them onto the trucks, very obvious when you see the loads going past.
One interesting thing that we have not seen before was a truck leaving the mill with four logs which had obviously been rejected. They were large, with big pipes and hollows, but apparently not good enough for turning into woodchips. They had probably made excellent homes for gliders, possums and owls, but will probably now end up as fire wood somewhere.
From passing loggers we got the usual: "F***in' get a f****n' job," and "Why can't you get a f***in' job, you slack useless bastard?" We were also jolted by one who stopped his truck and got out an axe and started caressing it in a menacing way.
All in a day's work.
